Staying Sane Whilst Working From Home

Nearly all of us have had to change the way we work.

Even though I stopped taking on new clients a few years back to concentrate on even better ways to help as many people as possible (through hypnosis audios and self-help eBooks), my existing clients now contact me via email and Skype (Life Coaching) or through Skype (Hypnotherapy). The usual meeting places, coffee shops, Regus Suites, and my office, are now a thing of the past.

Even after the immediate threat of Covid-19 has passed there is a real possibility that we will all still be working from home for at least year, maybe longer.*

This news alone will most likely send some of us into despair, if not some kind of depression.

So… what can we do to counteract this feeling of isolation and keep ourselves sane.

Below you will find some useful tips to help you.

Some Tips For Working From Home

Below are some tips that work for me.

 

Avoid working where you will be tempted or distracted

A good way to successfully work from home is to pretend you are going to the office.

I shower, shave and dress every morning, even though I am only travelling from one room to the other.

When I am at work I am working. Except for having breaks and making lunch, everything else is work related.

Would you stop to do laundry, watch TV or do the dishes if you were on the clock at work? Hopefully not.

You should never work somewhere that will tempt or distract you. Leave the TV off until you finish work, do your housework before or after your work time is finished.

If it is your thing, after work you can then binge on Amazon Prime. My favourite is “The Great Courses” channel (smile)

Take breaks

Breaks are important. You should aim to take a break every 75 to 90 minutes, for about 15 minutes per break.

Looking at social media or reading emails is not a break… get away from the screens and do something else.

Get some fresh air. Take a walk outside, play with a pet or talk to a friend.

You will find that you work much better if you walk away from your desk and computer throughout the day.

Avoid working in the bedroom

Your mind can get mixed messages if you treat your bedroom like other rooms in the house.

Working, reading, writing, or any other activity that is not social should be avoided in the bedroom. Your bedroom should where you only go to sleep or relax.

If it becomes your office, you will find it difficult to stop thinking about work all the time.

Try to set up a workspace somewhere else, even if it is the kitchen or dining table. If you are lucky enough to have the space, maybe you could work from a spare room or home office.

Set boundaries with other people, and yourself

Working from home with roommates, friends or family present can be difficult.

Firstly you will need to monitor yourself to ensure you are treating others, and yourself, in the correct manner. Just because you have access to others in your household 24/7 does not mean they want to hear or see you 24/7.

If someone starts picking an argument with you, who is to blame? Believe it or not, it is you. We are all mirrors and others pick up on our internal thoughts and feelings and direct them back to us. Remember to think kindly about yourself and others.

Secondly, if someone comes over and sees you on the computer, they may not register that you’re working. This is true especially if that person has never worked from home before. They just assume you can do whatever you want. I have had personal experience with that in the past when creating eBooks when I was married.

Tell everyone at home that you are working during certain hours and to not disturb you unless it is a real emergency. Just because it is your turn to get the toilet paper does not mean it is an emergency, the shops have probably sold out any way.

 

Avoid total isolation

Take some time to connect with others, this can be a short phone call, MS Teams call, or Skype call. Communicating by email and text is fine but you are still alone. Get interactive and call someone…Now!

Changing The Way You Think About Things

In these unusual times there is a need to stay focused on the main goal of all this social distancing and other new regulations that have come into force. The short of it is that if we disobey them then we might come to serious harm. Do we really know that the loved one, or stranger we meet has not themselves met another who has the virus and then can pass Covid-19 onto us, and then through us, to those we care about? It is our responsibility not only to ensure our own safety but the safety of those we care about.

In order for us to be able to function in this new way of living, we need to change how we think, how we think about ourselves, our family and our careers amongst other things.

How To Use A Journal

Only about 10% of the population has written goals and only about 1% use a journal to record them. So congratulations as when you start using your journal you will be one of a self-selected few.

Your journal is your tool for personal discovery, the place to keep ideas, and a place to analyse those ideas and form fresh ideas.

Recording your life is chaotic and therefore a filing system is required and this is your journal. It allows you to assemble the thoughts / information that has come your way.

An index at the back of each volume can be useful. Just list the highlights of your entries – with page numbers.

To cut down any chaos within the journal it is suggested setting aside certain sections for goals, quotes, new speeches, ongoing projects, problems and anything else you want to record.

Remember it is your book – you decide what, when, where and how you record your life.

Change Your Life: Change Your Thinking

Change Your Life:Change Your Thinking is a self-help book with exercises and tips in changing your thinking to a more positive existence. Use it for everyday help. Sections include a work book with exercises, and information on hypnosis and Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Change Your Life: Affirmations and Emotional Freedom Techniques

The two techniques in this book are actually opposites with the same goal; which is helping you achieve what you want in life.

Both techniques use the Law of Attraction to some degree, the affirmations more so than the tapping. The Emotional Freedom Technique called tapping is mainly used to get your emotions under control so that you can focus more on the positive aspects of your life, use positive affirmations and ultimately achieve your goals.

Sometimes you will use the tapping technique first especially if you are experiencing extreme difficulties. At other times you can go straight into using the affirmations.

This book will help you on the way in obtaining peace of mind and any goals you may desire.

Planning Your Future Career

At least for the next year or so interviews will most likely take place over VOIP, either MS Teams, Skype or some other platform. Remote interviews are not new. Back in 2014 I had a Skype interview with a school in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China (my former wife’s hometown) for a teaching position.

With remote interviews it is even more important to be able to think clearly, understand what is required, and give appropriate responses.
